You can calibrate your iBook, PowerBook, MacBook or MacBook Pro computer's lithium ion battery for best performance.

The battery has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery as it charges and discharges. The battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percent display accurate.

Whether your Mac asks you for certain information or you're seeking help from Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), there may come a time when you need to have access to your serial number, hardware configuration, passwords, email server or internet access information. That's when you discover that you've either forgotten or misplaced this important information.

Don't worry, just refer to your Mac Cheat Sheet instead. To make your Mac life a little easier, Apple has created this handy cheat sheet to help you organize often-asked and useful information about your Mac. Select the PDF document link above, print it out, fill in the fields with your information and store the Mac Cheat Sheet in a safe and secure place.

The links on this page are to manuals for older Apple products. Each link will take you to a Knowledge Base document containing a list of available manuals for that product in PDF format.

Apple Vintage and Obsolete Products

Apple has discontinued support for certain technologically obsolete and vintage products. Vintage products are those that were discontinued more than five and less than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued hardware service for vintage products with the following exception:

Products purchased in the state of California, United States, as required by statute. Owners of these products may obtain service and parts from Apple Service Providers within the state of California, United States.

Obsolete products are those that were discontinued more than seven years ago. Apple has discontinued all hardware service for obsolete products with no exceptions. Service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products.

When you connect an Apple Cinema Display (30-inch DVI) to a Power Mac G5 or Mac Pro, you may find that the highest available resolution is 1280 x 800, even though the optimum resolution for the display is 2560 x 1600. The maximum resolution available when this display is connected to a single-link DVI port is 1280 x 800 - you must connect the display to a dual-link DVI port in order to access the higher resolutions available to the display. If this occurs, make sure that you are using a compatible video card for the display, and are connected to a dual-link DVI port on the card. Compatible video cards must include a dual-link DVI port. Refer to the table for video cards compatibility.

Adobe

Adobe stopped developing new Type 1 fonts in 1999, and introduced its first OpenType fonts in 2000. As we converted our type library to OpenType, we made the corresponding Type 1 fonts much less prominent on our web site. Now that we have out whole library in OpenType, people really have to go out of their way to get Type 1 fonts. This has been true for several years now.

Until font downloading technology is perfected, Web designers must normally restrict themselves to fonts that are available on most users’ computer systems. So which fonts are installed on everyone’s computers? Your best bets are the ones that come with the Internet Explorer (MSIE) browser and the Windows and Macintosh operating systems. For the last few years, the MSIE fonts have been installed on every new Windows and Macintosh PC, so they are your best “cross-platform” bet.

OpenType User Guide for Adobe Fonts.
OpenType is a new cross-platform font file format developed by Adobe and Microsoft. OpenType is an extension of the TrueType sfnt format that can now support PostScript® font data and new typographic features.

Along with the typographic freedom Mac users have always enjoyed, there have often been strange font conflicts, inexplicable font substitutions, and even system crashes related to corrupt fonts. Mac OS X has fixed many of these problems, providing stability and exciting new font formats and capabilities. At first glance, fonts and font management in OS X may appear complicated—but we can help you understand them.

Whether you’re producing sophisticated type effects for print layouts or selecting an easy-on-the-eyes font for online readers, you know how crucial typography is for successful visual communications. Recognizing this fact, Apple has made typography a top priority in every Macintosh operating system from the very beginning. More than any other platform, Mac OS X gives you exceptional creative options for typography and makes your fonts easy to access and manage.
